# Servers & Apps

An **app** is anything on your network with a web interface: Jellyfin, Home Assistant, Grafana, an admin panel, a staging site. A **server** is a machine running the Seawise.io client. Each app belongs to one server.

## Where things happen

| Task                                     | Where                                                 |
| ---------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------- |
| Add or remove an app | The [client web UI](/client/web-ui.md) on your server |
| Rename, add an icon, make public, delete | **Servers** page in the admin app |
| Share apps                               | [Portals](/portals.md)                                |

Apps are added in the client, not on the website. Only apps listed in the client are reachable through Seawise.io, so nobody can publish something on your network without access to your server.

## The Servers page

**Servers** lists each server with its apps as tiles. The top cards count your servers, apps, and how many servers are online. The counter above the list (for example `1/1`) shows servers used out of your plan's limit.

![The Servers page](https://1178640790-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FN9a3N6oT8rUDCWLlcgkq%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-2c9dbacb346897d9a3da9d186ef8456724d88b35%2Fweb-servers.png?alt=media)

Each tile has a status dot:

| Dot    | Meaning                                   |
| ------ | ----------------------------------------- |
| Green  | Online                                    |
| Yellow | Starting, or the server just went offline |
| Red | Offline: the client can't reach the app |

Click a tile to open the app. Click the arrow next to a server name to collapse it.

## Adding an app

In the client web UI, enter a name, host, and port, then click **Add**.

![Adding an app in the client](https://1178640790-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FN9a3N6oT8rUDCWLlcgkq%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-3463b27ff43a879a0e92ba35342bb62d7b8e2389%2Fclient-add-app-filled.png?alt=media)

The host is where the client finds the app:

| Your app runs...                                        | Host                               |
| ------------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------- |
| On the same machine, client uses `--network host`       | `localhost` or `127.0.0.1`         |
| On the same machine, client uses port mapping | `host.docker.internal` |
| In a container on the same Docker network as the client | The container name, e.g. `sonarr` |
| On another device on your LAN | The device IP, e.g. `192.168.1.50` |
| Behind a Gluetun VPN container                          | `gluetun`                          |

See [Configuration](/client/configuration.md#choose-a-network-setup) for the Docker setup behind each row.

## App addresses

Every app gets a randomly generated, unguessable address on `seawise.dev`, such as:

```
https://stark-robalo-splash-berg.seawise.dev
```

HTTPS certificates are handled for you. Addresses can't be chosen or changed. To show apps under your own domain, use a portal with a [custom domain](/portals/custom-domains.md).

## Who can open an app

| Visibility              | Who gets in                                                                                                                            |
| ----------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Private** (default) | You, plus people you've added to a portal that contains the app. Everyone signs in first. |
| **Public** (Admin plan) | Anyone with the link, no sign-in. Not recommended unless the app is secured for the internet. See [Public Apps](/apps/public-apps.md). |

## Servers

Use the gear icon on a server for:

![Server menu](https://1178640790-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FN9a3N6oT8rUDCWLlcgkq%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-91386c0c02937f09f7f401440571225f277dcc70%2Fweb-server-menu.png?alt=media)

* **About**: status, client version, last seen, when it was added, how many apps, and its ID
* **Disconnect Server**: removes the server and all its apps from your account and portals. The client needs to be connected again to come back.

## Limits

|                 | Free | Admin |
| --------------- | ---- | ----- |
| Servers         | 1    | 25    |
| Apps per server | 30   | 30    |
